The Hummers of Jinglepot!

The Hummers of Jinglepot are so called because all were photographed on our 2 acre property on Jinglepot Road, Nanaimo B.C., which is located on the East coast of Vancouver Island, directly across from Vancouver BC over the Strait of Georgia.

The first hummingbirds were photographed here on March of 2004, with more added to the website in subsequent years.

My focus is to capture the unusual, the image that might be different, something that one may not normally see when looking through a book of Hummingbird photographs for example. When you look at my hummingbird photos, you will see what I saw through the lens of the camera. The background which is always out of focus consists of our trees, fences, the barn or the field. These hummingbird photos are real, the only Photoshop magic used, may include cropping or spotting and minor adjustments.

I have only seen two species of hummers here. The Rufous and the Anna. The Rufous males arrive first, about mid-March, followed a couple of weeks later by the females. Usually by the end of July they are all gone. The Anna Hummingbirds have been feeding and nesting in this immediate area since 2008. I did not see any previous to that. The Annas now stay here all year around including the winter but thin out about the time the Rufous arrive in the spring.

In 2012, I decided to expand the website with my selected favourite photographs that are not related to hummingbirds. We have an array of wildlife that visit our property which I have been photographing over the years and I would like to share these with you. There are 11 new galleries, and some have nothing to do with wildlife at all. You may find some photos a bit strange, odd or questionable, but I find them interesting. You may find some that break your heart. Sometimes, there is a story to be told with the photos, and I am compelled to tell of a rather sad story of Hop-A-Long and her Boe. For this story, look at the #11 The Unfortunate Gallery, page 2, and click on the large image of Hop-A-Long for the text. There are by far many wonderful experiences that take place as well and these I try to capture. This is real Nature, for sure.

I love feedback, it helps me design the website to make it interesting. Just click on the "contact us" link and tell me what you think. I would appreciate any comment.

Cheers,
George Giustini
